Light: more than a windowsill usually gives

Most succulents want considerably more light than people give them credit for — several hours of direct or near-direct sun a day, ideally in a south or west-facing window. Indoors, "bright" often isn't bright enough, which is why so many windowsill succulents slowly stretch and lean rather than staying compact.

That stretching has a name — etiolation — and it's the light-related problem worth recognizing on sight: elongated stems, wider gaps between leaves, and a rosette that's lost its tight shape as it reaches for more light. It doesn't reverse on the existing growth; the fix is more light going forward, and often propagating the top of a stretched rosette to start over compact.

Watering: the opposite instinct from most houseplants

Water thoroughly, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again — for most homes that's roughly every two to three weeks, longer in winter when growth slows or stops. Succulents store water in their leaves specifically so they can go a long time between waterings; a wrinkled or slightly deflated leaf is a plant asking for water, not one that's already failing.

The mistake almost never goes the other direction. Watering on a fixed weekly schedule, the way you might water a pothos, is the single most common way a succulent dies — the roots sit in moisture they're not built to handle, and rot sets in at the base before it's visible from above.

Soil & potting

Use a gritty, fast-draining mix — a dedicated cactus/succulent blend, or regular potting soil cut roughly 50/50 with coarse sand or perlite. The pot needs a drainage hole; this matters more for succulents than almost any other houseplant category. Terracotta pots are worth the extra cost here specifically because the porous material lets excess moisture evaporate rather than staying trapped against the roots.

Humidity & temperature

Low humidity is genuinely fine, and for many species preferable — most succulents evolved in arid conditions and don't benefit from the extra moisture that helps a Calathea. Normal room temperature works well; most common varieties tolerate a range from about 60–85°F (15–29°C), though cold-sensitive types should stay above 50°F (10°C).

Feeding

Feed sparingly — a light, diluted balanced fertilizer once or twice during the growing season is plenty. Succulents are adapted to nutrient-poor soil in the wild, and overfeeding tends to push soft, weak growth that's more prone to rot and pests than it is to thriving.

Propagation

This is where succulents are unusually forgiving. Most rosette types (echeveria, graptopetalum) propagate from a single leaf: twist it off cleanly at the base, let the cut end callous over for a day or two, then lay it on top of well-draining soil and mist lightly until tiny roots and a new rosette form at the base — no burying required. Trailing types like sedum burro's tail root just as easily from stem cuttings pressed into soil after the cut end has calloused. The single most common propagation mistake is planting a fresh cutting before it's calloused, which invites rot before roots ever form.

Are succulents safe for pets?

It depends on the species, which is the honest answer for a category this broad. Echeveria, sedum, and haworthia are generally considered non-toxic. Aloe vera, despite its reputation as a skin remedy, is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting or diarrhea. Always check the specific species you have rather than assuming "succulent" means safe across the board.
